Gorge Wind Challenge in March

Wind Challenge is a hands-on program that fuels student interest in science, technology and wind energy. The event is hosted in The Dalles annually, usually in March, by the Gorge Tech Alliance with support from Columbia Gorge Community College and Google. Registration usually opens in January. During the event, teams of three to six middle or high school students learn about wind turbine technology and design, and apply their skills in an all-day competition to build, test, and present their wind turbine models to a group of judges. No advance preparation is required and there is no cost to participate. Learn more at windchallenge.org.

Columbia Gorge FIRST® LEGO® League Tournaments in December

The Columbia Gorge FLL Qualifying Tournaments happen every December in the Gorge. Starting in 2010, the Gorge Tech Alliance has hosted the annual local qualifying tournaments for FIRST® LEGO® League teams in the Gorge. FLL teams are made up of kids ages 9 to 14 and are formed in August and September for the annual national competitions in December-January. Learn more about the national FLL program here. Use our Get Involved page to find a team for this year or contact us with questions.

October 2012 and May 2013: Gorge Gravity Games

Google and the Columbia Gorge Community College teamed up to host the Gorge Gravity Games in downtown The Dalles in 2012 and 2013. At each event, 20 student teams from public and private middle and high schools in Wasco, Sherman, Hood River, Klickitat, and Skamania counties converged in downtown The Dalles to compete in this unique downhill soap box racing derby race through downtown. They traveled wheel to wheel along the 5-block-long course on Court Street in handcrafted soap box derby cars powered only by gravity. Each car was designed and constructed by the students.

May 2012: Gorge Robotics Exhibition

This fun event hosted by the Gorge Tech Alliance showcased all the different levels of youth robotics in the Gorge! We had high school FTC teams, middle school FLL teams, elementary Jr.-FLL teams and the Renewable Energy Technology program at Columbia Gorge Community College. We shared what all the hype is about and how to get involved. Even if students had never touched a robot before, kids ran with their own robots in our soccerbot or sumobot challenge! This event was hosted in Stevenson in May 2012.
